Periodontitis and oral health: what you should know
Gingivitis and periodontal disease aren't just problems of the mouth - they can affect overall health too. Early prevention and regular care are key to protecting your smile and your health.
Periodontitis and gingivitis are two very common but often underestimated gum diseases that can have serious consequences not only for the teeth, but for the entire body.
What is gingivitis and how to recognize it?
Gingivitis is an early, often reversible form of gingivitis. It is manifested by redness, bleeding when brushing the teeth and mild swelling. Although it may appear subtle, left untreated it can lead to the development of more severe periodontitis.
Parodontitis: When it's not just about the teeth anymore
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the hanging apparatus of the tooth and can lead to tooth loss. But crucially, periodontitis is directly related to overall health. Studies show a link to a number of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, osteoporosis or complications in pregnancy including premature birth.
Prevention starts in childhood
Establishing proper oral care at an early age is essential. Children should see a dental hygienist regularly - this will help prevent plaque, gingivitis and cavities. Early habits lead to a lifelong healthy smile.
