Paediatric hip ultrasound: a simple scan with far-reaching implications

6. 10. 2026

Ultrasound scanning of a baby’s hips is a preventive examination designed to monitor the proper development of the hip joints and to detect any congenital hip dysplasia at an early stage. The examination is carried out in stages during the first few weeks of a newborn’s life. The first check-up is carried out after birth, often whilst the baby is still in the maternity ward. The second takes place around the 6th week, and the next between the 12th and 16th weeks of life. If further monitoring is required, the physician will recommend regular check-ups and determine the next course of action based on the current findings.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip may not be apparent at first glance. This is precisely why preventive ultrasound screening plays such an important role in the care of newborns. Detecting any abnormalities at an early stage enables us to determine the next course of action and to monitor or treat the child as necessary.

Adequate capacity and a calm environment for babies

At the AKESO POLICLINIC, we ensure there is sufficient capacity for paediatric hip examinations so that parents do not have to wait unnecessarily long for an appointment. Separate appointment slots are reserved for newborns to ensure a calmer environment for both the baby and their parents.

Ultrasound examinations of children’s hips are carried out by experienced physicians from the orthopaedic outpatient clinic, led by Dr Petr Kos.
