The Venous Outpatient Clinic specialises in treatingvaricose veins, whether formedical or cosmetic reasons.

As well as unsightly dilated veins, varicose veins can also cause swelling of the lower limbs, cramps, a feelingof heaviness in the legs, itching andeczema. In the early stages, they may simply be small dilated veins visible beneath the skin (known as ‘spider veins’).

However, some changes may not be visible, and the condition may initially manifest itself onlyas swelling of the lower limbs. Long-term venous insufficiency can lead to skin changes such asthinning of the skin, darkeningof the skin (known as hyperpigmentation), and, later on, the developmentof a leg ulcer

We treat minor findings (spider veins and small veins) usingsclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure in which a substance is injected into the affected vein, causing it to close.

We are then able to treat more severe cases using the latest minimally invasive methods –laser ablationandminiphlebectomy. Both procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia, without the need for general anaesthesia. Compared with traditional varicose vein surgery (developed in 1907), modern methods are characterised by being significantly less invasive, causing less pain, allowing for a quicker recovery and eliminating the burden of general anaesthesia.
