The temporomandibular joint, also known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. It plays an important role in speaking, eating and also contributes to facial expressions. Since this ligamentous joint is constantly being used, it is one of the most stressed joints in the human body. The joint allows two types of movement - rotational and translational, and is connected by two joints, so any changes in one joint can affect the other.

Diseases of the temporomandibular joint

TMJ disorders are relatively common, affecting about 15-20% of the population and manifesting themselves essentially with one or a combination of symptoms.

  • jaw pain
  • sound phenomena - peeling or crepitations
  • change in jaw mobility - in the sense of reduced or excessive jaw mobility

Treatment of the jaw joint

The key to effective and meaningful treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders is a correct diagnosis, which determines the extent of the problem and selects the appropriate course of treatment. Treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders is based on the following basic pillars:

  • Conservative Therapy - Uses non-surgical methods such as medications and therapies aimed at relieving pain and inflammation (analgesics, thermotherapy, home exercises and splinting).
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation - Special exercises and therapeutic procedures are aimed at strengthening muscles and improving mobility of the jaw joint.
  • Surgical treatment - In cases where non-surgical methods do not help, surgery may be considered to repair the damaged joint.
  • Joint Reconstruction - In some cases where the jaw joint is severely damaged, joint reconstruction may be necessary to restore function.
