Gynaecological screening: Why have a check-up every year?

3. 11. 2026

A visit to the gynaecologist is not something women usually look forward to. Some put it off due to a lack of time, others because of embarrassment or the discomfort associated with an intimate examination. A simple explanation is often given: if nothing hurts, there’s no need to rush. However, it is precisely this approach that can be risky. Many gynaecological conditions show no symptoms at first, and the first warning signs may not appear even when more serious changes are already taking place in the body.

A regular preventive check-up takes around 20 minutes and can help to identify health problems at a stage when they can be treated most effectively. We spoke to Dr Filip Hron from the gynaecology outpatient clinic at AKESO POLICLINIC about the importance of prevention, the examination process and other options for gynaecological care.

One of the main reasons why prevention should not be underestimated is the subtle nature of many gynaecological conditions. A woman may not notice any change in her health, yet a process may already be taking place in her body that requires a physician’s attention.

A striking example is precancerous changes in the cervix. These usually develop without pain or other obvious symptoms. Their gradual development can take several years, during which time there is an opportunity to detect them in good time. Similarly, some ovarian tumours can grow for a long time without causing any significant discomfort and only become apparent at a more advanced stage.

“Patients sometimes only come in when their health begins to change significantly. Looking back, they often say they put off visiting the surgery because of work, family or embarrassment. Yet it is precisely regular check-ups that can help detect a problem before it even becomes apparent,” points out Dr Filip Hron.

The purpose of prevention, therefore, is not merely to address current problems. Its main aim is to detect changes of which a woman may not yet be aware.

TRUST IN THE PHYSICIAN HELPS OVERCOME SHYNESS
According to Dr Filip Hron, it is essential that a patient trusts her physician and feels safe in the surgery. Open communication not only allows for a better understanding of a woman’s health needs, but also enables the timely detection of problems she might otherwise not have mentioned.

“A gynaecological outpatient clinic should be a place where a woman need not feel ashamed of anything. It is important for her to know that she can speak openly about any problem and that everything she tells her physician remains confidential,” the physician emphasises.

Another major advantage is a long-term relationship with a single gynaecologist. If the physician is familiar with the patient’s medical history and the patient is familiar with his approach, a relationship gradually develops which facilitates both communication and the examination itself. Trust can therefore be one of the most important factors enabling women to attend regular check-ups without unnecessary anxiety.

GYNAECOLOGICAL CARE IS IMPORTANT AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE
Women’s health changes with age. Whilst at a younger age, common concerns tend to be choosing suitable contraception or irregular and painful periods, other health complications may arise in later stages of life.

Women of childbearing age, for example, often have to deal with conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis or gynaecological infections. During and after the menopause, on the other hand, urinary incontinence and problems associated with falling oestrogen levels are more commonly addressed.

This is precisely why gynaecological care should not end with the last period. Even after the menopause, it is important to monitor one’s health, not to overlook any changes and to continue with regular check-ups.

Furthermore, a gynaecologist is not merely a specialist in prevention, contraception and reproductive health. As an obstetrician, they also provide care for women during pregnancy and help to manage any health complications that may arise during this time.

PREVENTION IS NOT JUST FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE PROBLEMS
A regular gynaecological check-up is an opportunity to focus on your health even before the first symptoms appear. It helps to monitor changes in the cervix, check the condition of the reproductive organs and highlight other health risks. An important part of this care is also recommending suitable breast screening, such as mammography or ultrasound, depending on the patient’s age and individual circumstances.

Putting off preventive care simply because a woman feels healthy may not be the right choice. It is precisely when she is not experiencing any symptoms that a regular check-up can be of the greatest importance.

Twenty minutes once a year is a relatively small investment of time that can help protect your health for many years to come.
