What spectrum of care do you offer at AKESO POLICLINICE?
I provide orthopaedic consultations. I mainly focus on my specialty, which is hand and wrist surgery, upper extremity overall. However, consultations can cover all musculoskeletal problems. In the event that a surgical solution to the problem is necessary, I perform operations within the Arthroscopy Centre at the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital. I also run a private practice in Pilsen.
With what problems do patients most often seek you out?
Patients often come with non-specific hand problems, pain that is non-traumatic, very often wrist pain, or so-called tennis or golf elbow pain. Not infrequently people come in with carpal tunnel pain. I also treat patients who are referred to me from rheumatology. I often consult with Dr. Jankova, who has a rheumatology outpatient clinic here in the polyclinic, about deformities of the fingers of the hand. A very common diagnosis is so-called rhizatrosis, which is actually a degenerative disease of the first joint of the thumb, which is usually solved by surgery.
Can you compare the care in Germany, where you worked, and here?
The care there is very specialised. Having worked there for many years, I am a big believer in narrow specialization. I think that routine is good in certain fields and benefits both the doctor and especially the patient. Otherwise, I think the level of care provided is on par. As far as my specialty is concerned, there is, for example, perhaps already a direct attestation in hand surgery, which I have, but here in the Czech Republic it does not really have an equivalent.
Is there any procedure that you like the most?
My favourite thing lately is to perform endoscopic carpal tunnel operations. And just for example the surgery for rhizatrosis, which is let's say a bigger reconstructive procedure. But I like to perform all procedures within my specialty. What's important to me is a satisfied patient. I try to add modern approaches to standard medicine that I have learned abroad. This includes the approach to the patient. I see a great sense in this. I try to dedicate all the time I have to the patient and to keep the time slots for individual cases as long as possible.
