31. 3. 2026

Practical medicine today plays a key role in both prevention and care coordination. In the interview, Bibiána Petrasová, MD, explains why she chose this field, what she considers to be the basis for quality care and what approach she offers to patients at AKESO POLICLINICE.

Doctor, can you briefly introduce yourself to the readers?
My name is Bibiana Petras. I come from Slovakia, from a small village under the Tatras. I studied medicine in Brno and after school I started working in Prague, where I still live today. In my free time I like to play sports and also bake cakes, which is a nice way for me to relax and take a break from work for a while.

What led you to medicine? Was it a childhood dream or did you come to it gradually?
I think it was a combination of both. My mother often recalls that when I was a child I had my doctor's case and "treated" everyone around me. But at the same time, I also came to medicine by a bit of an elimination method, as I gradually discovered what I enjoyed and made sense to me.

Where did you study medicine and how do you remember your studies?
I studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University in Brno. I remember my studies as a challenging but at the same time very interesting period. It was several years of intense learning, new experiences and meeting great people.

Was there any experience or person who shaped you significantly during your studies or at the beginning of your career?
During my studies I met many doctors who inspired me. I have always liked those who could not only be very good professionally, but also humanly empathetic. But the most influential thing for me was my placement in a GP surgery, who really liked his job and you could see that he cared about his patients. The patients trusted him and there was a strong sense of mutual trust between them. It was then that I realised how important the human approach is in medicine.

What were your first professional steps after school?
After graduation, I joined the Královské Vinohrady University Hospital in Prague, where I worked for about three years. It was a very valuable experience that gave me a solid foundation for further practice.

Why did you choose practical medicine?
Practical medicine appealed to me primarily because it allows for a long-term relationship with patients. This way, the doctor does not see the patient just once, but can monitor their health over time and be a guide in their health care. Sometimes this work is challenging, but it is the complexity of it that I enjoy. I also like the fact that you really get to know your patients.

What do you enjoy or find most fulfilling about being a GP?
I most enjoy the contact with people and the variety of the work. Every day brings new situations and challenges, and it's interesting to find solutions for different patients' health problems. It also gives me great pleasure to feel that one can really help someone.

What do you think is the most important role of a GP for patients today?
The GP is often the patient's first contact with the healthcare system. He or she can help with prevention, early detection of health problems, and orientation for further examination or treatment.

What approach to patients do you prefer?
I strive for an open, respectful and humane approach. It is important for me to listen to the patient and explain everything to them so that they really understand their treatment.

What do you consider to be the basis for good doctor-patient cooperation?
Trust and good communication is the basis. When the patient openly shares his/her problems and the doctor explains everything to him/her in a clear way, the cooperation can work much better. It is also important that the patient tries to follow the doctor's recommendations.

What do you think people should not forget if they want to take care of their health?
Prevention is very important - regular check-ups, a healthy lifestyle, getting enough exercise and rest. Many health problems can be prevented just by taking care of your health early.

What brought you to AKESO POLICLINIC?
I was attracted by the modern and very pleasant environment, which offers good conditions for professional development. I very much appreciate the fact that the polyclinic gives doctors space for further education and participation in congresses, which is very important for quality medicine. The attitude of the then director was also very kind and helpful. Similarly, I must say that the current director runs the whole facility very well and creates a pleasant atmosphere.

What services or approach would you like to offer to patients?
I would like to offer patients a professional but at the same time human approach. It is important to me that they feel comfortable in the office and know that they can contact me with any health problem. Our nurses, who are very kind, helpful and professional, also play a big part in patient care. Together we strive to provide the best care possible.

Do you have any message for patients who come to you for the first time?
I would like them to know that they will find an open and helpful approach with us. Our goal is to make patients feel comfortable in the office and know that they can turn to us whenever they need us. Together, we will always strive to find the best solution for their health. And if they happen to be a little apprehensive, I promise that a smile in the office is a must-have with us.
