An MRI scanner is actually a large tube that contains powerful magnets. During the scan itself, you lie on a couch surrounded by this tube. During the scan, the MRI makes very loud knocking sounds at certain times. An MRI scan takes between 10 and 40 minutes. Patients are not allowed to move during the scan, so children and adults with a fear of enclosed spaces are usually sedated or anaesthetised in other medical settings. However, a number of our patients can undergo an MRI without any medication. In fact, we use a special entertainment system during the scan to keep patients still. You'll be given a pair of glasses with a monitor and headphones so you can watch your favorite TV show or movie during the scan. An integrated microphone then allows contact between you and the radiologist if necessary.
