Treatment of the lymphatic system

14. 10. 2022

Lymphatic drainage is a therapy for the treatment of the lymphatic system, which consists of blood vessels of various sizes and nodes with transparent fluid - lymph - flowing inside. At AKESO POLIKLINICE in Prague we offer both manual and instrumental lymphatic drainage," says Hana Koutová, certified lymphotherapist.

What is lymphatic drainage?

It is the treatment of the lymphatic system, its mobilization in order to increase the outflow in cases where activity alone is not enough. Most often this happens during periods of greater stress caused by damage to the veins, but it is always advisable to trace the correct cause.

Is weight reduction related to lymphatic drainage?

In some cases, lymphatic drainage can promote weight loss, but relying on it alone is wrong. The weight loss itself must be activated by adjusting energy intake and output.

What are the most common reasons for seeking out your clinic?

Lymphology as a medical specialty is 70% dedicated to post oncology issues, i.e. the patient is healed from the acute phase and it is time for recovery. The patient is taken care of by both manual and instrumental lymphatic drainage, bandaging with both multi-layered and elastic stretch dressings. The remaining 30% in lymphology is mainly devoted to post-trauma and post-operative issues and the venous system itself, which does not always function as it should. Lymphatic drainage can provide significant relief in the early days and speed up the actual rehabilitation of the site.

When is it appropriate to proceed to manual and when to instrumental lymphatic drainage?

Both types of lymphatic drainage have the same effect on restoring lymph in the body. The differences between them are known in the sensation of the application itself, which is influenced by the length of the application, the chosen pressure on the sites and, above all, the release of the lymph nodes. Everything must be in the right proportion, this is very often neglected and results in unpleasant conditions. Then the patient's condition and wishes are also taken into account.

Who is lymphatic drainage suitable for and are there any restrictions?

It is suitable for anyone who has difficulties with the flow of lymph itself, but also for acquired or congenital reasons. Conditions of heart, liver and kidney disease, acute viral and bacterial illnesses are to be considered.

How often should I have lymphatic drainage?

The number is assessed according to the degree of impaired flow. As a rule, from 3 to 10 treatments are used, with an evaluation of the action during the course of treatment. And how often? It can be performed daily or every other day. However, at least 1 to 2 times a week for proper effect.

What to expect from the initial consultation?

During the initial consultation, we try to get as much information as possible about the patient's condition and determine a lymphatic drainage plan. This is a form that we will fill out together, clarifying any uncertainties if necessary.

Is lymphatic drainage covered by insurance?

Yes, but unfortunately it is limited. This is mainly for post cancer diagnoses, there is also a much larger number and therefore long term treatment is expected. It is similar for post-traumatic conditions, but the number is smaller and temporary.
