What is lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage, also known as lymphatic massage, is a specialized therapy aimed at promoting the flow of lymph - the fluid in the body that carries away toxins, supports the immune system and maintains an optimal internal environment. When the lymphatic system is congested, fluid build-up, swelling, feeling heavy or tired can occur.
"Lymphatic drainage is more than just a relaxing treatment - properly applied it will promote the body's natural detoxification, relieve swelling and contribute to overall vitality. We tailor the therapy to each client's condition and needs," explains Hana Koutová, DiS., a specialist therapist at AKESO POLIKLINIKY.
How does the therapy work?
Before the first therapy, you will have an initial consultation, during which we will assess your health condition and propose a suitable therapy plan. Lymphatic drainage can be performed in two ways:
- Manually - using gentle, rhythmic palpations on the surface of the skin.
- Instrumentally - using a special compression sleeve.
Therapy always begins in the neck and collarbone area, from where it progresses further as needed. Both methods can be combined with each other. The manual technique is ideal for targeted relaxation, while the instrumental technique helps to maintain the long-term effect.
Lymphatic drainage is recommended for:
- limb rotations
- feeling heavy or tired legs
- recovering from surgery and injuries
- cellulite and the need for detoxification
- strengthening of immunity
- hormonal changes
- prolonged sitting
- or as a prevention to maintain balance
In some cases, lymphatic drainage may be covered by public health insurance. It all depends on the specific diagnosis and the doctor's recommendation.
