The doctor said that allergies are a hypersensitive reaction of the body to various triggers. "An allergic reaction in the body is first caused by so-called sensitisation, when the body comes into contact with an allergen and develops antibodies. These then bind to the inflammatory cells upon further contact with the allergen and trigger an allergic reaction, which is, simply put, a form of inflammation," said MUDr. Jeník.
She stressed that allergies can have a genetic basis, but they also occur without a family history. Environmental influences play a significant role. Excessively sterile households can also be a reason. The gut microbiome serves as a key immune organ: if it is compromised, this can increase the likelihood of allergic manifestations.
What helps keep the gut healthy and protect against allergies?
- Regular use of probiotics, which support a healthy microbiome,
- a balanced diet with a minimum of processed foods.
MUDr. Jeník also pointed out that atopic eczema is often the first signal of allergies in children. However, it does not always mean that a particular food is the actual trigger; sometimes it is a temporary reaction to, for example, a new food, tooth growth, a viral infection or stress.
MUDr. Tereza Jeník provides expert care at the Hořovice Hospital and at AKESO POLICLINICE, where she focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases in paediatric patients.
